33highland Business District Discussed at Milcreek Township Council

At the invitation of Councilman Ben Lowry, I presented the idea I had to bring businesses together along the Highland Drive and 33rd South corridors. The reasons for doing this are to identify a name for the business district and develop some clout that we can take to the city and county councils to to have some long needed improvements to Highland Drive. Businesses could  then start to use the business district name in advertising to attract customers to the shops in the area. The ideas were met with broad acceptance from the council which had long targeted the area as needing upgrading for safety and economic reasons. Ultimately the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the businesses to work together to establish the direction they want the business district plan to take. Some of the projected ideas are:

  • Repave Highland Drive
  • Complete the curb, gutters, and sidewalks along Highland Drive
  • Replace old wooden light posts with more attractive metal lightposts with banner hangers
  • Establish  cooperative advertising, full page adds highlighting the businesses in the business district
  • Develop a logo and banner to identify the business district
  • Have businesses promote the business district on their websites and print advertising
  • Have a business district stroll or fair possibly a side walk fair or block of one or two side streets between Highland and 13oo East

It was suggested that we work with Councilman Brian Howick who heads the economic development for the Millcreek Township Council.  Jani Iwamoto fron the Salt Lake County Council suggested we also work with Dale Carpenter in Salt Lake County.

A master plan could be developed and then presented to the Millcreek Township Council and representatives from Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City.  With businesses united and with the backing of the Millcreeek Township Council we have a much better chance of evoking needed change.  Click hear to download a document entitled General Plan Priorities for 2010 from the Millcreek Township.

We want to continue to get business owners to join the discussion, get listed in the directory and communicate.

Naming the Highland Drive 33rd South Business District

Merchants along the HighlandDrive 33rd South Business District and have shown some interest in naming the Business District from 27th South to approximately 37th or 39th South and including businesses on 33rd South from about 17th East west to 13th East. This has been attempted in the past but was focused on one industry and has never caught on completely.

The Goal – to come up with a catchy name that people in town will start to use. We would like to get it to the level of recognition that “Sugarhouse” and “9th and 9th” have now.

It has been discussed not to use the Brickyard as a focus, but rather to draw the traffic up to Highland Drive and 33rd South and along the smaller side streets. Our shops have a much different feel than the “strip mall”atmosphere of the Brickyard. The business district has everything from high style to very eclectic.

The Benefits of this would be to help revitalize the Highland drive 33rd South Business District and then provide a possibility for cooperative advertising and local events like a street fair or stroll where we could possibly close off a few of the side streets and use the parking lots of some of the businesses for booths or entertainment.

We can create a logo for the business district and consider getting banners to hang on the light poles along  the streets.
